Description The Surrealist poet Paul Éluard had been a close friend of Roland Penrose’s since about 1925 and they had closely collaborated on the First International Surrealist Exhibition, London, 1936. Paul’s wife was Nusch, (Maria Benz) formerly a circus performer, was much celebrated by the Surrealists for her beauty and Picasso painted her portrait several times. They are seen here whilst on holiday with Lee Miller and Roland Penrose in his brother’s house at Lambe Creek near Truro in Cornwall.
