Description Max Ernst, one of the founders of the Cologne Dada movement in 1919 became the most pre-eminent of the Surrealist painters. He had been a close friend of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose since the 1920’s in Paris. He escaped from France soon after war broke out and went to live in the US. An American artist who had lived in Paris, Dorothea Tanning met Max Ernst in New York in 1942. By this time she was established as a Surrealist painter, and although she began living with him the following year she continued to develop her own distinctive strain of hallucinatory figurative painting.
