Title CHECKMATE. Checks cleverly placed_
Artist Lee Miller
Year 1943
Town/City London
Country England
Format Modern
Description Lee Miller's colour images show us an artist unafraid of experimentation - exploring colour in the 1930's when this type of photography was still rare; the film a new and exciting product, and difficult to process. In the 1940's, Lee occasionally used colour in her fashion photography, as we see here with 'Checkmate' from the October 1943 issue of British Vogue - 'Checks, cleverly placed, make this suit with corselet shaped jacket, bias pleated skirt.' This is an image of intelligent composition. The deep reds pop against the muted backdrop, a thread which runs through the image - the coat, hat, the buttons, the model's lipstick; another thread - the blue of the coat lining and the model's jumper, and then the shock of those yellow gloves.
