Description Lee Miller had returned from the war, belatedly, in 1946 and very much changed by the experience. Her transition back to some semblance of normality was not an easy one. After almost two years spent surviving on her wits, Lee had to adapt to life in London with her partner Roland Penrose, and her old professional life at Vogue. She was unsettled and angry, and almost certainly suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder. The trip to the United States in 1946 was an attempt to reset. Lee hadn’t seen her parents in years, and both she and Roland were keen to look up their old friends, such as Julien Levy, Max Ernst and Man Ray.
