Description Lee Miller arrived in Luxembourg after the last of the liberation celebrations. She was pleased to encounter a familiar face - Sergeant 'Doc' Berners, pictured here, who greeted her with the words, 'Lady, every time you turn up, something's bound to happen' Lee described Echternach as 'a real ghost town ... It was haunted by specters of holiday makers and by wandering, abandoned pigs and poultry which squawked, squealed and ended in the frying pan of a German or a Yank - whoever managed to lure the beast into reaching range. The Krauts held the water from houses on our side of the river and we weren't on fraternizing terms.'
